The Russians carried out massive strategic nuclear weapon drills in October 2023, a far more serious practice than this latest tactical (ie small yield) weapons drill.
Unfortunately the threat of nuclear war has been ever present since the start of the SMO but recent events aren’t particularly significant. The Russians are now in a commanding strategic position, something which wasn’t the case in previous years. They know if they use even one tactical nuke they’ll become pariahs on the international stage and lose all the support they’ve developed to date. They dont need to, and won’t imo.

These ‘escalations’ are nothing burgers which is why the Russians don’t take the bait and just keep grinding forward in the Donbas where it counts.
The West has no options except pinprick attacks which get sensationalised by the media but have no meaningful strategic impact.

We'll see. This is an existential struggle for Russia, which is why nukes are on the table.
